Early Childhood Registered Apprenticeship Program First in Region

Posted on April 26, 2024

Johnstown, PA (April 25, 2024) – Building a career in early childhood is now easier and more affordable in the Alleghenies region. The Learning Lamp is introducing a Registered Apprenticeship Program for anyone interested in working in child care, preschool, or elementary-age classrooms. This is the first Early Childhood Education (ECE) registered apprenticeship program in the region. It allows workers in the field to take college-level courses at no cost, improving their skills and the quality of care. This is a significant step forward for the region’s child care programs and their employees.

Building upon the success of The Learning Lamp’s approved Pre-Apprenticeship program, established in 2022, this initiative is designed to assist entry-level child care staff in earning their Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. Participants will enhance their skills and knowledge while earning a paycheck. The program is available to any employee of a licensed child care program in the Southern Alleghenies region.

“This program supports the development of early childhood professionals through coursework and paid on-the-job learning opportunities,” said Anna Zettle, Pre-Apprenticeship Program Manager at The Learning Lamp. “By offering a clear path to career advancement and financial stability, we aim to create a workforce that is not only skilled but also committed to the growth and development of the region’s young children.”

The ECE apprenticeship model combines job-embedded learning, college-level courses, and increased pay for participants as they reach academic milestones. The Learning Lamp aims to expand the offering in the near future to include associate’s and bachelor’s level coursework. This will allow child care workers across the region to complete college degrees in early childhood education or child development at no cost.
