GJCTC, The Learning Lamp Join Together for Healthcare Career Learning Opportunities
Posted on March 6, 2025Johnstown, PA (March 6, 2025) – What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question children are asked from a young age. Thanks to a partnership between The Learning Lamp Center for Children in Richland and the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center (GJCTC), local preschoolers will have the opportunity to explore careers in healthcare with help from high school students enrolled in GJCTC’s Health Assistant program. Children will rotate in small groups through various health and wellness-themed learning stations manned by high school students— an interactive learning opportunity for both groups of students!
Learning stations will be set up Tuesday, March 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at The Learning Lamp’s classrooms at GJCTC, 445 Schoolhouse Road in Johnstown. Groups will meet again Wednesday morning, March 12 at 8:30 a.m. and wrap up the two-day event by 10 a.m.
Health & Wellness Activities include:
- Welcome Desk – Children roleplay as medical staff, using stethoscopes and nurses’ hats.
- Boo Boo Care – First aid basics, including proper handwashing and bandaging “boo-boo bears.”
- All About Germs – A visual lesson on germs using glo-germ lotion and UV light, followed by handwashing practice.
- Crafty X-Rays – A creative exploration of bones using paint and art activities.
- Skeleton Hunt – A gross motor activity where children identify and learn about bones with a life-size skeleton.
- Dental Care – Lessons on healthy food choices for strong teeth and proper brushing techniques.
The two-day event is a perfect dual learning opportunity for youth—preschoolers and high school students—engaged in learning at GJCTC. The Learning Lamp’s little ones are introduced to health and hygiene in a playful, engaging way while soon-to-be Health Assistants practice interactions with young children and share the knowledge they have gained to promote healthy living. The event is collaboration at its best and a win-win for all involved!
