After School Outreach Program

The Learning Lamp After School Outreach Program is a free, drop-in program that provides help with homework, supervised activities and a hot meal up to four days a week during the school year.

free academic support for your child

The Learning Lamp After School Outreach Program has sites in Johnstown’s Oakhurst and Coopersdale communities. The program accepts children in grades K-7 and is supervised by a PA certified teacher. Funded through the United Way of the Laurel Highlands, individual and corporate donations, and grants, participation in the After School Outreach Program is FREE!

Locations and Hours of Operation

Outreach meets Monday through Thursday afternoons during the school year and include homework help, structured recreational, enrichment, character- and team-building activities and a hot meal. The program also features free summer camp at each location. Students living in the Oakhurst neighborhood will meet at the Oakhurst Community Center from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Children in Coopersdale will meet at the community center from 5:45 to 7 p.m. The Outreach program follows the Greater Johnstown School District calendar.

SnapologyParents or guardians must complete a registration form for their child that includes emergency contact information. A participating agency in the USDA Child and Adult Food Care Program, The Learning Lamp is able to provide children a free evening meal every program day.

Children can drop in for as few or as many days as the family would like. Full participation is encouraged as on-site coordinators and staff assess children’s needs in reading and math and provide added support. When possible, The Learning Lamp staff will work with your child’s teacher to address specific academic needs such as vocabulary and spelling.

Staff members utilize a behavior management and point reward system to encourage positive, growth-producing experiences for program participants. “Restorative Practices” are utilized to increase responsibility skills and strengthen relationships. This relational approach focuses on belonging, social engagement, accountability and connectedness.

Caring Staff with Clearances

Our outreach staff are caring adults with Act 151 (Child Abuse), Act 34 (State Police) and Act 114 (FBI fingerprinting) clearances.
